I've just implemented something that may be better.
Now you can run "smplayer -mplayer-info". That command will run
mplayer, get the mplayer version (and detect if it's mplayer2 or not),
save the info to the smplayer config and exit.
I think you can run this command in the post-installation script of
smplayer, this way smplayer will know what version of mplayer is
installed. You can also run it in the post-installation scripts of
mplayer and mplayer2 (if smplayer is installed), this way if the user
switches from mplayer to mplayer2 (or vice versa) smplayer will know.
I attach the patch for smplayer 0.8.4, so you can test it.

Ok, I'll take a look at those bugs and try to fix them.
