Dear Maintainer,
I've found a bug in VLC and this bug is already described in bug report so I
just to confirm this bug and the remedy that worked for me.
First, I believe, I was in Preferences and I switched to a VLC's different skin
(from the set, named as "skins2" in vlcrc), and after that VLC refused to
start, doesnt matter as it is or to play a file. I tried to launch it from the
menu or using CLI. In the second case, the response was "Segmentation fault"
without starting the program.
Then, I found the certain bug report and after reading it I used the idea from
it: I commented lines about "skins2" in ~/.config/vlc/vlcrc. After that VLC is
working with a default skin without any problem as it should be.
