Why, only because libav gets a more powerful and efficient
competition?

As Marco said, why should he fix bugs in av which have been fixed since
ages in ffmeg in many (most?) cases?
I am all for having a good ffmpeg set of cmd line progs and libs in
Debian. It is too long that this sad and useless split was made.
