Out of curiosity, why does it copy it? Why don't we ship pre-generated docs?

Yes, I think so. Policy[1] says symlinks should be relative, so it is
not a must, and I think this is a reasonable deviation. I prefer an
absolute link to patching even more the source (which coul be
complicated).
