Changing the <lib_dir> in the ~/.lives file from
/usr/lib/
to
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/  (on this machine)
solves the issue:
So correctly setting that to 
/usr/lib/${DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH}
would also be a way to fix it. I don't know if there is a built-in
value for this as well but it really should be trying the system
library path by default IMHO.
