on the official website we can read the following:

        SMPlayer 14.9.0.6812 has been released
        Summary of changes:

        We are very happy to announce that this version has added support for
        mpv, which provide very interesting new features.

Considering that the mplayer and mplayer2 are a little bit obsolete, and that
the smplayer has added support for mpv, I would suggest to use mpv as a default
smplayer playback engine.
