Yes, exactly.

Correct: this is about what to avoid _tracking_ in git. Whether or not
upstream tarball is redistributed in pristine form or not is independent
of this¹ setting.

¹ Another option "filter-pristine-tar = True" does affect upstream
tarball, but I recommend to *not* use that and instead ensure upstream
tarball is repackaged _before_ importing when needed by a) setting uscan
option "repack" (in addition to "dversionmangle" and "repacksuffix")
with watch file version 4, and b) use "gbp --import-orig --uscan".
