This is a known upstream bug, fixed quite some time ago.
The problem is when there's any delay with the source
(often observed on a wifi network), audio stops.
Here's the upstream ticked about this:

Upstream commit 887bda11d23665416bd9403151ad1acced68b267 fixes the issue.
Please fix this in stable too, I have to recompile vlc
locally due to this bug :)
