I am on testing.  I had upgraded to 2.2.2-4 and had this trouble.  A 
bunch of things updated at the same time.  I had to reinstall 
2.2.1-1~deb8u1 to get vlc working again.

Later, I was able to upgrade to 2.2.2-4 and have it work correctly. So 
it probably has to do with underlying software rather than vlc. That or 
recycling X solved the problem.
