Bug#855115: kodi does not work wireless xbox360 controller

I cannot get a wireless xbox360 controller to work with kodi v17.  The controller works fine using the xboxdrv package and it controls the menus of retroarch (a different program).  But I could not get the controller to work with kodi. The kodi.tv wiki wasn't much help.  :(    It could be something stupid I've tried too, but 8 hours was my limit of troubleshooting this.
