If you see nothing is probably because you have hidden the dialogs, and
in some cases opening a new one doesn't open the panel.
There is a long standing bug with the GTK2 build:

Does this match what you're seeing?

Yes, but inkscape is bundling the library, and it statically links it
(if you peak at the build log).
