sorry it's taken so long to get back to you, mysql stuff is really far back in
my queue right now :(
anyway, thanks for your extensive research into the problem! could you do one
more step, if you haven't already, and report this at bugs.mysql.com, and
forward us the bug number from their system once it's in place? if/when they
fix the problem we can hopefully isolate the patch and prepare an update for
stable.
