Turns out that the mysql-dfsg build already forces -fPIC on amd64 to
work around similar problems. I've verified that rebuilding mysql-dfsg
with the attached patch and rebuilding amarok against the resulting
libmysqlclient-dev allows amarok to start up in a secondary user
account. Unfortunately, in my primary user account (which has a music
collection of about 1100 songs) it now dies with
GLib-ERROR **: Cannot create pipe main loop wake-up: Too many open files
