These look good. I was mainly looking for a few odd things that have
cropped up on previous bug reports.

Yes mysql-gui-tools would have been built against libmysqlclient16.
That in itself should not cause a problem. Changes to /etc/mysql/my.cnf
and possibly /etc/mysql/debiab.cnf might however. You might be able to
keep it going by backing out those changes. However there is not a lot
of mileage in that approach. We really need to understand why
mysql-workbench is not working for you.

Okay I think you mean the MySQL 'root' user. Access to that for a
database administrator is reasonable. However trying to access the MySQL
root user, by running mysql-workbench as UNIX root sounds like a
security mistake to me (if I understand correctly that that is what you
are doing). This is starting sound like a mysql-workbench problem to me
although I know nothing about that product. I'll just copy them for
now. Another question. Which distribution do you have in your
/etc/apt/sources.list file?
