Thanks Luca for the reply.
The package has been in the NEW queue since end of September. Is there
anything I can do to help making the review easier?
I understand it might at first seem as a big task, the package is
after all very big. However MariaDB is a fork of MySQL, so after all
you should not need to review everything from scratch. The package
mariadb-5.5 is the equivalent of mysql-5.5, so you could just compare
to it. This MySQL package and all the earlier ones have been in Debian
for a long time, so it should not be too big of a task/risk to accept
MariaDB. After all, these days the MySQL version is released by Oracle
while MariaDB is the truly free version by MariaDB Foundation and
original MySQL developers. I would assume that MariaDB if safer for
Debian legally and policy wise more compliant.
Also note that my MariaDB packaging (control files etc) are based on
how the current (and upcoming) MySQL package is done in Debian, and
thus my MariaDB package is different from the upstream Debian
packaging. My MariaDB version has been prepared with the help of the
Debian MySQL packagers team and it is doing a good job following the
Debian policy. If my package does not get into Debian, people will
continue to use the current upstream version and will miss all the
good parts related to using proper Debian packages with the proper
Debian quality.
If it helps, I could for example be on IRC at a specified time to
assist somebody why is reviewing the packages by answering questions
etc.
Don't hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can do at this
point to make the review of mariadb-5.5 easier.
Thanks for your work keeping Debian high quality!
