I have done an additional test now.
Up to now i used phpmyadmin to talk to mysql.
Now i tried to use the shell command instead.
mysql -u username -ppassword dbname -e "UPDATE user SET user_password = CONCAT(':A:', MD5('public')) WHERE user_name =
'public'"
This seems to work.
mysql -u username -ppassword dbname -e"select * from user WHERE user_name = 'public'"

So maybe the problem is caused by PHP?
