ah, and now that i've read http://bugs.debian.org/682232#89, i was able
to sort out the workaround, by moving /var/lib/mysql/ib* out of the way,
leaving innodb_force_recovery in the default state (0, i presume) and
restarting.
things seem to work fine now. I've saved a copy of the ib* files if
that would be useful in recreating the problem.
