Thanks Andreas. I think your change was sensible - leaving behind
/var/lib/mysql with user data is acceptable in piuparts testing, in
particular because there is anyway a debconf dialog where the user can
on purge opt to delete their data directory too.

Actually we had a MySQL and variants Debian/Ubuntu packaging sprint in
London the week that just ended. There we reviewed all the install
scripts and removed lots of legacy stuff (and also found some small
bugs that got fixed). So I think you don't need to file bugs on those
for now.

MariaDB changes are visible in the log at
http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-mysql/mariadb-10.0.git/log/

The changes on other variants are in intermediate github repos, but
will soon by synced to
http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-mysql/mysql-5.6.git/log/ and
http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-mysql/percona-xtradb-cluster-5.5.git/log/

Thanks for your feedback!
