I agree with you Bjoern. However, apache, lighttpd, and nginx, are
not forks. They are their own implementations with pro's and cons and
communities all their own. These forks have been quite similar for a
while, so it is understandable that they might be mistaken for similar
enough to "just pick one".

MariaDB is only just now becoming a real fork, having diverged enough
with 10.0 that they're not willing to guarantee compatibility anymore.

Percona is and likely always will be a derivative, but the Galera features
make it a worthwhile one to ship.

And Oracle continues to improve MySQL at a rapid pace. Unlike RedHat,
who has to compete directly with Oracle, we are just competing for pieces
of peoples' spare time or funding from the likes of Oracle.

I do think that the folks that want to keep their fork in the stable
release should probably get on the path to DM fast. I have less and less
spare time for DD work these days, and I don't see more DD's than we
have now stepping up.
