Your solution is OK, I just wish to have unified packaging across all
the packages I maintain to minimize my total work. Thus I think about
backwards and frontwards compatibility. Many users are likely to
install newer MariaDB/Percona/MySQL versions than what the distro
provides, or for other reasons mix in different repositories where
MySQL is packaged in different ways, so a capability based
interoperability would be nice, at least for a year or so until the
new packaging style gets picked up in other places too. But I haven't
invented the solution yet, I'll keep thinking about it for a while.
