This is not just my feeling but the stance Debian has taken on linking
OpenSSL with GPL programs. To be clear, MariaDB and Oracle could fix
this by adding an exception to _their_ GPL license, but AFAIK, they
have remained silent or refused to do so. I don't think MariaDB can do
this alone, as they're not the sole copyright holder of all of the code
in MariaDB. OpenSSL "users" cannot do anything about this problem, as
the license of OpenSSL is the one adding a GPL incompatible restriction
on re-distribution.
Anyway, one point, CYaSSL has been renamed to WolfSSL, which is available
now in stretch and should replace CYaSSL in all instances.
