What changes do you anticipate would be needed? Installing a new
version of MariaDB should not require any more work than installing a
new version of MySQL. In both cases it is recommended to make a backup
of your old database first and test the upgrade in a testing
environment before doing it to your production database. In both cases
you need to actively upgrade the packages and depending on your setup,
maybe update some configuration files to match the options available
in newer MariaDB/MySQL versions.
