I would dispute that what you linked for MariaDB is a sound upgrade instruction.

If the user followed this instruction, and if during the upgrade 
bacula-director-mysql ends up getting configured before mariadb-server,
then the postinst of bacula-director will try to upgrade its schema
in a database that is not running.
