Reading the blog post requires an account, so I can't read it now, but
from the part that is visible I can see it runs `sudo
mysql_secure_installation` and it sets and uses a password for MariaDB
root user for local connections, so which is misguided and
unnecessary, so I assume the rest of the article is misguided as well.
You should probably just stop the server, move the files, ensure they
have correct permissions and set the datadir variable to point to the
new path (https://mariadb.com/kb/en/server-system-variables/#datadir)
