i'm upgrading the severity on this one to important, as it directly
affects the usability of the package.

is there any chance we could get you to replicate this problem?
specifically, if you could put a "set -x" at the top of the file
/var/lib/dpkg/info/nagios-common.postinst and reconfigure
the package.  there's a lot of legacy code in the postinst
script from the previous maintainer's version of the package,
i wouldn't be surprised if something funky has happened with
transitioning to the new package.  i'll take a look myself in
the meantime, but the debug output from a set -x version of the
postinst would be invaluable.
