Package: nagios-plugins
Version: 1.3.1.0-12
Severity: normal

Quoting from my exim4 logs under heavy load:

2004-12-14 02:27:17 SMTP protocol violation: synchronization error (input sent without waiting for greeting): rejected connection from H=220pc220.sshunet.nl [145.97.220.220] U=nagios

I can't see anymore in my logs, but I guess my server responded with a
4xx error to the connect because the system load was too high.
check_smtp should have closed the connection, but didn't. Also, looking
at the code, there is no support at all for multiline server responses.
There is support for sending MAIL FROM I see, but that's not very useful
without the possbility for a RCPT TO too, to check whether a certain
email address is allowed. nagios also doesn't check status codes at all,
to warn if that code is something different than 2xx or whatever is
expected as a positive response at that time.

hi,

it looks like the latest version of check_smtp behaves a little
better. it waits for the server response before sending helo,
which it does before sending starttls stuff. if you still think
there's a problem, please reopen the bug and mention what still
needs to be fixed, and i'll take a stab at it.
