yeah, i've had similar problems in the past with some form of the smb
plugin config. the problem is basically that the actual plugin really
sucks. i'd love to rewrite the plugin against some API instead of
interpreting the output of smbclient, but unfortunately there isn't
an API that will let us do this afaict[1].
so if you're looking to waste some time, take a look into the argument
processing/handling section of the plugin, and there's probably
something somewhere where some option is being unconditionally used or
set or somehow overriding another unrelated option or something. (that's
really specific, isn't it? :)

[1] libsmbclient only lets us deal with files/directories, but doesn't
let us do anything useful like poll disk space status.
