Hopefully my story will give you a new perspective on this issue.
Here is what happened to me:
- Use check_dhcp for the first time
- Does not work although the dhcp answers manually
- Double check the syntax to make sure I did not do any mistake
- Check the host name to see if I'm not addressing another dhcp server
- Try the check_dhcp manually and see that it works (I'm root but that does
not strike me at the moment)
- Bang my head against the wall
- Dig nagios logs and see a permission denied
- Connect to irc.freenode.net#nagios and explain my problem
- Check my firewall configuration and port redirection
- Dive into the vserver / dhcp server hell for a good hour without
finding anything relevant
- Get a cup of coffee and rant with colleagues
- Someone on #nagios asks if check_dhcp is setuid
- Change the suid and have it work
One could argue that I have poor diagnostics skills. However, I very
much doubt that the following use case is plausible:
- Use check_dhcp for the first time
- See it fail
- Read nagios-plugin README.Debian
- Add the suid bit
My hunch is that the majority of use case don't involve reading
README.Debian. I suggest that another fix is found to solve this
usability problem. I'll let you re-open this bug if you think I made
my point.
Thanks for packaging nagios !
