I'm not sure if you are aware of the "-u" switch of "check_nrpe"
(starting with NRPE 2.6):

| svelt at schnuffi ~ % /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe --help | grep UNKNOWN
|  -u         = Make socket timeouts return an UNKNOWN state instead of CRITICAL

Using "check_nrpe -u -c ..." as command line and
"notification_options w,c,r,f" (no "u" option!) would save you from
defining MANY servicedependencies.
