[Pkg-nagios-devel] requires too many packages

Hi Guys:
When I try to install nagios3 package on my server, apt-get requires a lot packages as following:
The following NEW packages will be installed:

73 upgraded, 33 newly installed, 15 to remove and 958 not upgraded.
But on same environment, I can download Nagios3's source code , compile and run without problem. To keep our production server stable, we normally prefer to avoid upgrading too many packages. So can you explain why we need upgrade so many packages for Nagios3.
