[Pkg-nagios-devel] Bug#780098: check_running_kernel: broken for Jessie kernels

Package: nagios-plugins-contrib
Version: 14.20141104
Severity: normal

Hello,

apparently, check_running_kernel is broken for Jessie kernels. Instead of
detecting the installed kernel version, it reports:

# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_running_kernel
UNKNOWN: Failed to get a version string from image /boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-4-amd64

I searched for the upstream version by DSA (dsa-check-running-kernel)[1],
but that version still has the same issue.

Another problem with check_running_kernel is that it works only for Debian
systems. A kernel check script that seems to work on CentOS, Debian and
Ubuntu based installations is check_kernel from the icinga2 git repository[2].

It has been removed from the icinga2 git repository in the meantime[3] in
favour of check_running_kernel, but in my experience is the most universal
one and clearly the best candidate for a cross-distro check_kernel script.

Please consider to either fix check_running_kernel to work with Jessie
kernels, or replace it by the linked check_kernel.

Cheers,
 jonas
