It works when using the default delimiter (tabs)

 echo -ne 'shared-web-test\tmy-api-cert\t2\tCRITICAL - certificate
expired' | /usr/sbin/send_nsca -H localhost -to 5
 1 data packet(s) sent to host successfully.
