[Pkg-net-snmp-devel] Bug#451294: snmpd dies on any machine with pppoe ppp interface

Package: snmpd
Version: 5.4.1~dfsg-4

i found months ago that i couldn't get snmpd to stay running for more
than a minute or so (or until the first query) on my gateway machine
at home, but it runs perfectly on several other machines. i had more
important things to do so didn't spend much time trying to figure it
out.

i've just installed it on another gateway box (because i want to run
cricket on it) that i look after and have exactly the same problem.
the only thing in common between the two machines (apart from them both
running debian 'unstable') is that they have pppoe interfaces. other
machines i'm running it on have multiple interfaces, one even has a
wlan0 interface (so snmpd is OK with non-ethernet interfaces).

as far as i can see, all of the machines it dies on have ppp interfaces
and all of the machines it doesn't die on don't have ppp interfaces.

so, i think i may have found the problem.

i can, on one of the machines, get snmpd to stay running longer by
shutting down the ppp interface, starting snmpd, then starting up pppd
again. it can last a few hours that way, but will eventually die...and
it's not a practical workaround, anyway.

I don't know what version the problem started with (several months ago
at least), but these machines are currently both running:

ppp 2.4.4rel-9
pppoe 3.8-3
snmpd 5.4.1~dfsg-4

As the Catholic church becomes more and more tolerant, some day they will
have to consider the possibility of a gay pope. Possibly the largest
issue will be having to decide whether he is "absolutely divine" or "just
simply marvelous."
