Hi Jerry,
Thanks for you interest in Netatalk!
There are a few options for installing Netatalk on Debian Bookworm. You can pull in the Unstable or Testing repositories and install through apt as usual. See for example the discussion in https://github.com/Netatalk/netatalk/discussions/574
Disclaimer that I don’t know if this is still a viable strategy. Some users have reported library incompatibilities. Then you can use the official Docker image, or if all else fail build from source code. The netatalk website has more details: https://netatalk.io/
You may be pleased to hear that the netatalk package has been accepted back into Debian Trixie, so by mid 2025 it should be easier to get started if you upgrade the distribution. Cheers!Daniel

(I miss netatalk in the bookworm upgrade, and would rather not backtrack
to Debian-11 to get it.)
My background is as science technical support for physicists in a
national laboratory - retired after 30 years in 2011.
I built some hardware, maintained some computer systems, wrote some code
for PDP-11 and VAX computers for science projects.
I wrote some assembler for a DSP, and driver enhancements for data
acquisition on a micro-VAX in simpler times.
Our AFP usage is strictly local behind a NAT, so protected from the
internet. (the router is a Cisco 2921)
We mostly use Apple computers within our LAN, but have several (older
apple) computers with Linux installed on them.
(a mini, a laptop, and an older raspberry-pi booting from an sdd for
Pi-Hole)
I've installed from tar-balls when they weren't too daunting.
I'm a total newbie to Debian Backports.
If there is a Trixie Netatalk backport to bookworm, can you please
point me to instructions?
What would you like feedback on?
