So I tried your xen patch Len, and with 173.14.05 I still got a crash on
i386. With some experimentation I have determined it is related to using
a second, non-nvidia card (I have 3 screens at work, two from a 7300 and
one from an old ati mach64). Disabling the ATI screen allows X to start.
As I have only a 6600 at home I don't know if this happens on amd64. 

More investigation is required it appears.
