I had many issues caused by being stuck on the old xorg release, so I
decided to package the latest (173.14.18) Nvidia release of the driver
and, of course, to fix the provides field issue.
I'm currently using the new release on my box and after some tests I
can say it seems to work just fine with current xorg (1.6.1-1).

I'd like to share my work: is there anybody willing to give me some
web space for an upload (source and i386 binaries)?
