Well it certainly worked with 2.6.26 and 2.6.29 for me today.  I wonder
what is going on.

Which version of debhelper do you have installed?

Hmm, why are we passing -v to dh_gencontrol.  That's supposed to be -v
with a version appended, but $(VERSION) is never set by the looks of it.

Why is this working at all...?

Oh it seems, modules assistant is setting VERSION, and making things
work somehow.  Interesting.

How are you building?
