Yes -- that works.  Thanks!

Note, I've only tested nvidia-kernel-legacy-173xx-source and 
nvidia-glx-legacy-173xx (both version 173.14.15-2) for i386, though 
built for a 64-bit kernel with PAE.

Before trying the -2 packages I tried modifying debian/rules line 73 
on the -1 nvidia-kernel-legacy-source package thusly:

-       install -m 0644 
$(CURDIR)/debian/override$(CURDIR)/debian/nvidia-kernel-$(KVERS)/usr/share/lintian/overrides/nvidia-kernel-legacy-173xx-$(KVERS)
+       install -m 0644 
$(CURDIR)/debian/override$(CURDIR)/debian/nvidia-kernel-legacy-173xx-$(KVERS)/usr/share/lintian/overrides/nvidia-kernel-legacy-173xx-$(KVERS)

which also allows the compile to complete.  I didn't try using the 
compiled code, though.
