hi,

the upstream code (that is,
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/96.43.13/
) compiles fine

the difference is AFAICT that the upstream code also runs a file
'conftest.sh' that sets some macros ; while debian/rules doesn't

the bad news is that the resulting code crashes :-(
