173.14.27-1 was just uploaded to unstable. Packaging and dependencies were 
reorganized again, several packages have been split. You may want to test 
this. I can't explain all the dependencies of the previous version, but I 
hope there are no useless deps included in the current packages.
On the other hand, I never worked with synaptic and I don't know anything 
about its Recommends: handling.
