I don't think this is the case, because the X server (unlike udev) does
not invoke modprobe with the "-b" switch, so nouveau should still work
if you don't have an xorg.conf.  But people may wonder where their
gettys went (when KMS kicks in, it erases the screen contents leaving
only the blank cursor, and you have to press <enter> to see the login
prompt).
