Does the problem occur in the [kgx]dm login screen or when the user
session is started?

If it happens when starting the user session, create a new user so that
all user configuration is reinitialized.

How does xorg.conf look like? Please try a minimal one as described in
README.Debian in the nvidia-glx package.

If all this does not help, try downgrading Xorg to the version in
squeeze (xserver-xorg-core 1.7 etc.) The newer NVIDIA drivers do work there.
