Bug#611705: nvidia-vdpau-driver: VDPAU library couldn't be loaded

After installing this package, I still can not get vdpau accelerated video.
Mplayer reports:

Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object
file: No such file or directory

After doing some checking the issue appears to be that the link
/usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so doesn't exist:
