I have one system that requires the 173xx drivers, but it's running
unstable (with an X server stuck at the last version NVIDIA released
drivers for).  I can confirm that all the bits work properly with that X
server, but it's not easy for me to test the rest of the backported
package machinery.
I haven't ever had a system that needed the 96xx drivers.
