The vesa test was done in a mixed vesa+nvidia setup, that does not work
reliably.
Please try again after setting glx to mesa and rebooting. And use the
minimal 4-line vesa config file.

run

  update-alternatives --config glx

and select the "mesa-diverted" option to disable nvidia, thereafter reboot
