Tried again to reproduce this. Again in a Sid chroot amd64, this time
also adding i386 architecture with dpkg.

Tried installing nvidia-driver, and then nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver,
works fine.

Tried installing nvidia-driver, purging it away with the same command
you used, and then installing nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver, works fine.

Tried installing nvidia-driver, libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 and then purging
and then installing nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver and
libgl1-nvidia-legacy-340xx-glx:i386, works fine as well.

Sorry, but without more information I don't know what else to try to
reproduce your problem.

So for now I'll mark as unreproducible and reduce the severity to avoid
autoremoval.
