After upgrading to version 375.26-1, DPMS works even without setting it in xorg.conf, indeed even without an xorg.conf file. I was unable to find this issue in Nvidia's release notes for this driver version, though. Anyway, this bug can be closed. -rbk. -- <http://in.terlu.de/~kreckel/>
