Ok, so it is turning it off, never mind.

Going back to my other suspicion, it might be incompatibility with the
rootless xorg that's in stretch/sid.

Can you please try to install:

xserver-xorg-legacy

This will run Xorg as root with a wrapper. That's the last thing I can think of.

It's on my list to have a sid partition on my laptop, but haven't had
time to do that yet, so I can't reproduce this problem.
