Bug#845103: Black screen after installing nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver (testing)

Package: nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver
Version: testing/stretch

Sorry I can't be more specific, but my system was rendered unusable
after installing the above (recommended) driver.

The first time I attempted an upgrade from jessie to stretch. During the
upgrade I was prompted to install the above legacy driver. I did so, but
apt appeared to ALSO install the current nvidia-driver and related
packages. After rebooting I was left with a black screen, no mouse or
keyboard.

I tried to do a clean install of stretch relying on the default nouveau
driver. All was well. I then tried installing the legacy driver. This
time apt seemed to install all the correct packages, nothing from
nvidia-current. But it did seem to install the kernel headers for 4.8
rather than 4.7 which was the running kernel. End result was the same.
Black screen, no mouse no keyboard.

I believe this may be the same bug as #833895

The graphics card in my system is a nvidia 9600GT. Never experienced
this problem on this system with Wheezy or Jessie.

I hope this is helpful.
