The xorg log now has much less noise, but still ends with this failure.

Google "EVO Push buffer channel allocation failed" has a lot of (old)
hits, but does not seem to be too helpful.

solved it with switching the system from i386 to amd64

You could report a bug to Nvidia,

but I don't have much hope that non-critical things get fixed in the
legacy driver.
